I have not met one memorable person at CSUF, I have met many.

I entered school as a liberal arts major and hated it. I encountered several professors, A. Gradilla, R. Reyes, Rangel and very recently E. Gonzalez, and by far they have given me the very best college experience.

Obviously, I became a Chicano Studies major and by far, it is one of the best choices of  my life. I have met incredible people -- friends, professors, mentors and more.

Some people leave footprints in your heart, and if you knew them like I know them, you would understand why. I don't think they know the great impact they have on students' lives. But if they did, I'm sure they would be proud.

In a heartbeat I would say that CSUF needs more of these professors who take time, and devote dedication, to their students both in and out of class.

Thanks, professors, (especially the Chicano Studies Department). Because of you, I am pursuing a master's degree. You have shown me that an education can change many lives -- mine being one!

PAZ

One person who made a big difference in my life is definitely my EOP counselor, Jennifer Baldaray. She has always been so supportive and helpful to me throughout all my years here at CSUF. I really appreciate her taking the time to answer every question I had about classes, etc.

Jennifer went the extra mile for me and even if she wasn't able to help me with something, she would always direct me to the person who could. Not only did Jennifer help me out immensely with picking my classes and academic counseling, but she also took a sincere interest in my personal life as well. It really touched me that she would always ask how I was doing and feeling, and she always asks how my sons are doing and remembers their names.

Jennifer is a great counselor and person and she was definitely someone who helped me to keep pushing myself through school and believe in myself. I am blessed to have met her.

Gary Granville, hands down. He was my professor in communications (1980-1981) and the adviser to The Daily Titan. I'll remember those editing sessions in his office, the cigarette ash begging to drop, the office clutter and the brilliant observations he'd make. I remember the first meeting with him. I had been an entertainment writer/editor at my community college newspaper in New York. I showed him my clips. He said, "You are good. Why do you want to go into news (writing)?
I said it was because I wanted to make a bigger difference.
He looked up and me and cracked a wry smile.

Also, I'll remember Mary Hartman, a great copy editing instructor. Her class was hard as nails but I learned so much in it. Stuff I still use today as a working journalist.

THE memorable person (still) on campus who made a big difference in my life is Jerry Samuelson. How? He turned us loose on graphic design projects by conveying the thought that there is NO right or wrong way to accomplish any sort of design to sell an idea, a way of life, a product, a sporting event, or anything else, as long as you believe in your ability to create a design that communicates to the end customer.

Thanks to Jerry, all this happened for me during the late 1960s when he was my counselor/adviser and graphic design teacher.

I'll always owe you, Jerry.....THANKS!

Hmmm. Well, let's see:

1) Dr. John Ibson - one of the greatest American Studies professors.  Very knowledgeable and never a dull class.

2) Dr. Jack Bedell - a great sociology instructor who made my London Semester very memorable.

3) Dr. Paul Peretz - a very funny, intelligent, and sarcastic professor who made public finance interesting.

4) Dr. Donald Castro - my Dad who I will forever miss and who made my experience at CSUF very special.  He handed me both my diplomas.

The most memorable person... I'd have to agree with Valdez (comment below). Dr. Jack Bedell is the greatest gift the Anthropology Dept. could have ever received. If Franz Boas was the "Grandfather of American Anthropology," then Jack Bedell is the Grandfather of CSUF Anthropology. He makes each day a special day with his delightful smile and laughter. He is more than knowledgeable and wise. He is a true Titan and a great inspiration to many.

Another most memorable person has to be the infamous Dr. Joanna Roche. She makes the study of art history more than enjoyable. She has a passion for modern art and continues to spread her knowledge of it to those under her teachings. She is there for her students as an advisor, a mentor, a guide, a professor. Inspirational and exceptional, Roche will always be my professor, mentor, and my friend.

Dr. Jack Bedell, stands out as my most memorable person on campus.  I took a Sociology courses with him and enjoyed it very much.  He has a particular way of connecting anything as simple as a grain of salt to life.  He is a person of great knowledge and passion for teaching.  He was also the first and only professor I know who took his shoes off while teaching.

I was never a history major, but every time I took a class taught by Professor Warren Beck, I wished that I was. I explored the great American West in one class. I learned more about WWII than I ever imagined in another. The history of our golden state came alive in still another of his classes.

If I were to look back through the textbooks that I kept from college, I would find the books that I thought I should save - those from my major - the books I might need for my future career.

Then I would find the books that I wanted to save - all from Professor Beck's classes.

When students question why they should bother studying history, I hope they have the experience of taking a history class from a teacher who can bring another era to life, understand its relevance, and make those in their classes want to take another history class.

My Professor Gloria Bogdon is one of the best teachers that I have ever had in classes.  She has a realistic vision of the American Indian lifestyles, histories and their future.  She is concerned about her students and demands high standards in her classroom.  The best part about her as a teacher and a person is that Gloria truly wants her students to learn and grow as the people that they are meant to be.

Her Indian classes are some of the best times that I have had on the campus and I am grateful to have taken her classes.  The world would be a grand place with more people like her.
