Father Raphael Luevano, Chapman University offers a theological reflection on the cases of missing and murdered women of Juarez-Chihuahua, Mexico. The women are victims of femicide, the murder of women by men. Luevano's main purpose is to engage femicide as a theological challenge. He will give a brief description of the social, political, and economic conditions that have fostered violence against women in Northern Mexico.

The theme for the 2009/10 Legacies is “Social Action through Community Involvement”. Mr. Alan Woo of Community Action Partnerships of Orange County (CAPOC) and CSUF student activist, Dameion Renault are the guest speakers to “kick off” the call to volunteer. We are sending the message, “even in tough economic times, you may not be able to spare a dime, but please spare some time.” Legacies is about the power of the individual spirit to make a social change.

Hidden Wounds, Paper Bullets: Contemporary Iranian Art featuring 8 Iranian artists living in diaspora from their homeland. As a result of the Iranian Revolution of the 1970s, the artists participating in this exhibition fled their native country and now openly explore western culture and Iranian traditions through their art. These artists offer insight into a community torn between democratic and theocratic values, and a Persian past and Islamic present. In the Project Room Gallery Shirin Neshat’s DVD, Turbulent, will be showing.

Grand Central Art Center, Project Room

Turbulent is a back-and-forth between two separate but simultaneously run scenes that follow a sullen and traditional ceremony of a group of women and a contemporary, boisterous group of men. For two years guest-curator and historian Elizabeth Little has been organizing this exhibit. She has lived in Cairo, Egypt and studied Middle Eastern history at the University of New Mexico. This timely exhibition grows in importance every day as Iran currently struggles with political turmoil.

Ever since the media coverage of comments made by Reverend Jeremiah Wright, religion has intersected President Obama’s politics. On the table are many sensitive issues such as abortion, gays in the military, federal funding for faith-based programs, and relations with the Muslim world. The lecture will review and analyze how well the president has navigated these issues thus far. Dr. Hubbard has been a regular speaker at OLLI for years. He is always outstanding.

The registration deadline for the November 14 EWP is October 29, at 5 pm. Go to the University Testing Center's website, www.fullerton.edu/testing for EWP online registration instructions & additional test information. There is a $20 test fee, payable at the time of registration. Test registration may close early if maximum seating capacity is reached.

If you missed the registration deadline but wish to take the EWP, you may try to take the exam on a standby basis. Call the University Testing Center at 657-278-3838 for detailed standby instructions. Admission is not guaranteed.

The EWP consists of a 90-minute essay. You may bring a dictionary and/or thesaurus to the exam, but no electronic aids will be allowed.

If you have a disability that requires special accommodations or if you are unable to test on Saturdays because of religious convictions, you should contact the University Testing Center prior to the registration deadline for the test date you wish to register.
